LANGDON'S FERRY.
(To the Editor of the Grey River Argiiß. Sib,— l wißh to ask you if it ia not time that a road to the Arnold was made along this side of the rivei', so, as to do away wish the crossing at Langdan's Ferry ? I ask this question, because it has been long i\ serious matter for public consideration, and is clearly becoming more so, when \re view the. now numerous fatal accidents theit have occuwed there. It now seriously commends itself to m« to-day in seeing the funeral of the late lamented John Byrne, suggesting to my recollection names of many who have likewise perished through the want of continuous communication alongthis side to our up-country districts. Those who travel much from town upwards know that the slightest freshet prevents communication at Langdoi\'s, and the long-promised punt, months abifVe months in course of erection, is not yet completed. What for years has proved ineffectual to meet the requirements ;of our population, or even secure a partial immunity from danger, is still the only means of fording a river dangerous in the extreme and known to be such. It reflects very little credit upon the undisoriminating lavishness of the Nebon Government in granting protection -and rights to such va u.a,'>le properties as these ih t they did not insist upon a punt being placed upon the ford within a specified time, If the rucepients of the groat wer^ « Qt agreeable to oarry out such a provision, other persons I know are ready to do so. For Langdon's especially, many would willingly enter into competition., and ut all events place more serviceable boats, and have more precautionary means of rectifying accidents than are at present in use, While writing this, let it be understood that I intend nothing personal against MrLangdon. I have known him some years, and know him to be brave, fearless, energetic, and attentively anxious to please every one. I also know him to be a» kind s, hearted man as. breathes, and one who has helped j many a hungry man who had not the means of purchasing a meal, It is only against the means and the road that I speak, and I again ask why should not Government cut a dray-trajck or a horsetrack (if no more) along this side, and so do away with these dangerous falls, and the constantly receiving tale- of drowning. We are distinctly promised a road, to the racecourse by the County Chairman, and if the first part and largest expense can be incurred for pleasure, surely the rest pan be done to prevent the presence of death being so often thrust upon us. I do not believe our legislators are so callous to the demands of common humanity as to neglect this demand it laid properly before them, and X think it is now time that such were done, To delay is to lose, tho. opportunity, to work when the remembrance of the several casualties -is fresh in our recollection is best ; and I trust the people here will at once take action to have this matter- brought before the approaching Coungil^ It will also give us a main road to an important mining district, and afford an opportunity of yet further developing its. resources, There are no difficulties to be overcome in its formation, except the slight one from the town to the Omoturftotu Greek, and consequently the sum. demanded for its formation ought, if properly asked fup, to ho at once granted. Our representatives have the credit of b^ang energetic and disinterested in their exertions for the Grey, J believe them to be so, X hope they will, in that character,, see. it necessary to push this matter forward.^-.J am, $c,, QjWYMOum. [We direct the attention of the Mayor to this matter. A public, expression of opinion might assist in, bringing about the desjred. end,-^liip. \ , * .
