BOROUGH COUNCIL.
♦ The usual weekly meeting o^the Borough Council was held on Friday evening in the Town Hall. Present: J. Kilgouf, Esq. (Mayor), in the chair; Councillors Kennedy, Parkinson, Purcell, Nichol, Strike, Moore, and Coates. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Town Clerk stated that he had telegraphed to the County Chairman requesting to know what arrangements had been made with respect to mining within the Borough, and also when the balance of the subsidy now due would be paid ; but he had received no answer. A letter from Mr Flannery was read, requesting the remission of the rates on his hotel, in consequence of its having been burned down, when it was resolved, " That in consequence of the present financial position of the Council they cannot remit the rates or make any alteration in the valnaiion.'' Accounts for repairs to the steam-crab J winch, and other accounts, were referred to the Finance Committee. I Mr H. Kenrick, cleric to the Bench, sent 10s as the. amount of tines imposed during December under the Corporation bye-laws. Received. An application from Messrs D. Maclean and Co. for permission to occupy the ground upon which their slaughter yard is fixed, in order that they might effect extensive alterations, was referred to the Public Works Committee with power to act. officers' salaries. Mr Moore moved—" That the resolution carried by the Council for reducing the expenses of the Council be rescinded, and that the office of wharfage and tonnage rate collector be continued, and that tenders be called for collecting the same ; als-'i, that the Town Surveyor's salary be rw'iu ;■■('• to the sum of Ll6O or L2OO per avn;i!< , tt ith permission to take private pi.tocice, and that the Town Clerk's salary be temporarily reduced. " Mr Kennedy pointed .out that the pro.-
vious resolution of the Council must first be rescinded. Mr Moore then moved-*-" That theresolution earned on Friday, November 26, be rescinded." Mr Nichol seconded the motion. After a discussion as to a point of order, whether sufficient notice had been given of the. motion,, it was put and lost, there voting for it, Messrs Nichols Parkinson, and Moore ; and againstit, Messrs Purcell, Kennedy, Strike and Coates. RICHMOND QUAY. Mr Strike moved—" That tenders be called for forming and gravelling that portiou of Richmond Quay, from Johnston street to the end of the protective works below Arney street, same to. be made twelve feet wide from tho footway, payment to be made subject to the LISOO voted by the County Council for the protective works." Mr Purcell seconded the motion. The Mayor reminded the Council that they had pledged themselves to -use any balance of the vote that, existed in .putting in thred stone breaks to. prevent five spreading in the protective works. Mr Parkinson moved an amendment " That it be made a first charge, on the surplus balance, if anyj of the vote of the County Council, after the works now in progress, and contingent works are completed." Mr Kennedy seconded the amendment and Mr Nichol opposed it. The amendment was negatived, and the motion carried: ; The Council then adjourned,
