CRICKET MATCH.

Greymouth v. Hokitika. The annual Cricket Match between representative elevens of the Greymouth aid Hokitika Clubs took place on St. Andrew's Pay on the Hokitika. ground. The weather was everything that couM ba desired, and there was a very large assemblage of spectators. The result proved a thorough good thrashing to our men, which they took with the best possible grace, although they bad good reason to say that it was outsiders and not the Hokitika Club that "dressed them down." The highest scorers on the Hokitika side were Halliday and Daley, neither of whom are members of that Club. We may mention that the former gentleman offered to plaj' on the Greymouth side, but his seiviccs were refused, as all the players who had gone down were bonajtde members of the Club. Had they accepted his offer they would undoubtedly have won the game. Considering that our Learn were without their two best bowlers and batters, they made a very good stand, and we may expect a very different result when the return game comes to be played here. After the match so/ne friendly sports were indulged in, which resulted in suvei-ul victories to the Greymouth men. These were a foot race between Messrs H. Mace (Hokitika) and W. B\ Strike (Greymouth) — distance, 100 yards. The first start was a false one, and Mace ran the distance without, his opponent. He agreed to run again. A'good start was eifected this time, and Strike managed to win by about the width of his body. The next event was between four well-known gentlemen athletes — Messrs, M.. Browne and Wright (Greymouth), and .Mps3vs. Harcourt and KetT (Hokitika)— distance, 100 yard:. Wright got well away at the start, followed closely by Browne and Kerr. Wright, however, kept his position to the finish, winning by about a yard, Browne second, Havconrt and Kerr running a dead heat for third place. Then followed a very uncommon contest in Hokitika, a ■half-mile walking race, between the " Banger" and Boden (Greymoutli). Both got well away together, and kept in that position for about 200 yards, when Ihe "Ranger" spurred ahead, and was not again overtaken. He won by about five yards. In the evening the Greymouth Eleven were entertained to a banquet, at which the usual toasts were honored, and the greatest good feeling prevailed. Our Eleven and visitors were very highly pleased with the kind reception they received in Hnkitika, and hopo soon to, be able to return the compliment here.
