The Bella Vista, barque, cleared out at Melbourne for this port on the 18th. The Ceres and Northern Light were loading when fie Rangitoto left. The Banshee is loading at Dunedin for this port. The only arrival since our last has been the schooner Black Hawk, Captain Kilgour, from Dunedin, with a general cargo. She was sighted in the roadstead standing off and on in the morning, and on the afternoon's tide the s.s. Waipara andp.s. Despatch left the wharf, the former having a long start. Clearing the break, both steamers shaped a course for the schooner — the Waipara having a decided advantage in the start and inside place. As the Despatch crept up steadily on the Waipara the excitement was great, but the local boat did her work steadily and was the first to speak the schooner and secure the tow. A rope was passed on board and she was brought to the wharf in fine style, although there was a pretty heavy sea on the bar at the time, while the Waipara steamed away for Hokitika.

The s.s. Rangitoto left Hobson's Bay on November 22, at 4.45 p.m. ; passed through the Heads at 7.18 p.m., with a strong head wind; abreast Wilson's Promontory at 5.15 a.m. on the 23rd ; from thence to the New Zealand coast strong head winds and thick weather, with heavy head sea ; sighted the land at 3 o'clock a.m. on Sunday, then blawing a gale of wind, which moderated at 8 a.m. ; anchored off Hokitika at 8 a.m. The passengers and mails were landed by the s.s. Persevere the same afternoon, and she was {Kjaln tendered yesterday and despatched to Nelson, passing this port at 7 p.m. She left Melbourne just as the English mail was telegraphed at Adelaide. She did not wait because the mail contract has expired.
