RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Saturday, November 27. (Before W. H. Revell, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness. — William Wells was fined 10s or 24 hours imprisonment, for having been drunk and incapable. John M'Conachie was charged with the same offence ; also, under the Vagrant Act, with being an habitual drunkard. He pleaded hard for one more chance, as he would then leave the town. The Magistrate said he would give the defendant a last chance, and discharged him. SLY-GROG SELLING. The adjourned case against Elizabeth Revell for selling spirits without a license was gone into. For the defence, George Mackay, who was in the house at the time the offence was alleged to have been committed, swore positively that " only peppermint" and no spirits whatever were supplied to the men. The case was dismissed. . '■ _ .- The same defendant Avas further cl' a'ged with keeping and exposing for sale certain spirituous liquors without a license. The evidence in this case was almost similar to the last. Constable Flanagan found in the house, under a form, one bottle containing brandy, another with port wine, and on a shelf an unopened bottle of port wine. The defence was that the liquor waf kept for the defendant's private use, and not for sale, and were stowed away in a provision box under a form. The Magistrate held the charge proved, and fined the L2O. Mr Guinness, for the defendant, gave notice of intention to appeal.
