(from our own correspondent.) THE VICTORIAN DERBY. THE MELBOURNE CUP. ARRIVAL OF THE OMEO. Bl.uff, Wednesday, 8.7 p.m. The s.s. Omeo arrived at 6.40 p.m. She left Sandridge Railway Pier at 2.30 p.m. on the 4th, Passed through the Heads at 6.15 same day, and by the Promontory at 5 a.m. next day, and Swan Island at 8 p.m. Had strong head winds on leaving, and during the latter part experienoed light N.E. winds. Sighted Preservation Inlet at 8.30 p.m. on the sth. The result of the race for the Victorian Derby was as follows : — Charon ... 1 Detective 2 Lamplighter 3 The following telegram was received by Captain Calder, from Messrs M'Meckan, Black wood, and Co., when the Omeo was passing through Port Phillip Heads : — •' The Cup Race. — Warrior, first ; Monk, second ; Pluebe, third. Manuka scratched." The following telegram, addressed to Mr Nichol, a passenger on board the Omeo, says — Send letter to Otago Daily TimeSy the Cup winner is Phoebe, Monk second, Warrior third. Forward account by post. Signed— S. W. Veney, 11 Neave's Buildings, Melbourne. No despatches have been received from Melbourne. The ship Lightning has been burned at Geelong. The Challenger sails for Wellington on the sth inst. Dunedin, Friday evening. We have no further news about the Cup. All in a fog here. Wellington, Nov. 11. A quantity of quartz specimens, from the Knimanawa Range 3, have been found, upon analysis by Dr. Hector, to not contain even the color. The commission for swearing Dr. Featherstone into the Ministry has been received. He will not take the oath until the eve of his departure. The criminal conviction of Caton, for conspiracy, has beenconfirniedin the Court of Appeal. The judgment of the Court below, in the case of Bernard Simpson, who was charged with fraudulent insolvency, has been reversed. H.M. s.s. Blanche sails for Fiji tomorrow. Hokitika, Friday. A quartz prospecting claim was granted to-day ut the Warden's Court, Kanieri. The locality is said to be 35 miles up the Hokitika River. It is rumored that the County Chairman has refused to grant a lease to Blake and Co. at the Taipo.
