DUNEDIN.

(from ottr own correspondent.) Oct. 30. Last Wednesday's Gazette contains the formal intimation of the change in the police department — the resignation by Mr Branigan of his various offices, and the appointment of Mr Weldon.late of Southland, in his place. Mr Weldon comes with a high character as a chief, so it is not likely that our splendid and efficient police force will suffer from the alteration. Orator' Grant held another meeting in the Octagon on Wednesday — the making ot Otago a penal settlement being the advertised subject for discussion. There was a considerable number of people present all the time, coming and goin< , and Grant could not complain of his audience. His spesch was, as usual, very, discusaive, and it ended in the following resolution being put to the meeting, and, of course, carried : — " Resolved that, in the opinion of this meeting, the fifteen representatives of Otago have basely sold the interests of their constituents at the last Assembly ; and, therefore, they do not represent the people of Otago, but are simply adventurers, place-hunters, officeholders, land-monopolists, agents, touters, parasites, and unprincipled politicians, that aim to enrich themselves at the public expense ; that the Dunedin members are notable cowards, who will neither resign nor dare- to meet their constituents ; that this meeting, then, solemnly prescribes .such men as unworthy of any future public support or confidence." Pretty talk to be addressed to our chosen fifteen. The Caledonian Society held their annual meeting this week. The financial statement shows a flourishing state of affairs — the outstanding debentures being gradually redeemed, so that in another year or two the Society will be out of debt-. The stand, plant, &c., are all in a good state of repair, and sundry additions have been made. The directors for the ensuing year were appointed, and we are promised a first-class programme for the New Year holidays. — The annual fete of the Foresters comes off on the North Recreation Ground on the 9th prox. Things theatrical have been very dull this week. Mr Bartlett finished his engagement on Monday, and has left for Melbourne. "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein" is to be produced on Monday in great style. — On the other hand, the Glassblowers have had good houses during the week, and continues to be very well patronised — the gift arrangement bringing out the folks wonderfully. The weather up till yesterday has been very fine, but early yesterday morning the wind changed to S.E., with a considerable fall in the temperature, and last night it came on to rain, which yet continues to fall pretty smartly. From the north accounts of heavy floods have been received. Saxby has predicted other three days for next week. Business, as usual towards the end cf the month, has been dull. The J. N.^ Fleming has arrived from Glasgow with a large cargo of general merchandise ; the Victoria, from London, brings another; and the Free Trader has also arrived from Hobart Town with a cargo of timber and other produce, so that stocks have sustained a pretty considerable augmentation during the week.
