We have frequently of late had occasion to call the attention of tho local authorities and the police to the necessity which exists for immediate and vigorous steps being taken to suppress the number of disorderly and immoral houses which have lately been rapidly on the increase in town. In some quarters of the Borough after nightfall vice is openly paraded before the eyes of decency, so much so that it is almost unsafe to pass through these neighborhoods. The attention of the police has been given to this matter, and every use which possibly can be will be made of their limited powers to abate the nuisance. We now call the attention of the Borough Councillors to this matter, in order that they may consider whether it would not lie equally advantageous to the respectable citizens to have a bye-law passed for the suppression of disorderly and immoral houses, as for the removal of nuisances existing on private property . The Borough Council has power under the Municipal Corporations Act to make bye-laws for certain fixed purposes, and also for any purpose of good rule aiia government within tlie Borough ; and surely not one of the members will be found to say that they are justified any longer in overlooking this most important question. Let it be investigated, and understood whether or not the power we have referred to can be exercised by the Council. If it can, the best intei*ests of the community demand that it shall be brought into force as speedily as possible ; and if not, the people will understand that they must look elsewhere for redress.
