NELSON GOVERNMENT TREATMENT OF THE GREY DISTRICT.
(To the Editor of the Grey Jtiver Argus.) Sir— The Ahaura "Miner" seems to be under the conviction — judging from his letter of this morning — that it was my object to defend the whole system carried out by the Nelson Government in its treatment of this district. He will permit me to inform him that nothing was further from my intention, and if hecau only divest himself of those parental sympathies which are not unnaturally aroused when our darlings are designated " dirty little urchins," I am disposed to believe that a re-perusal of my former remarks— but really this is asking too much — might show him his error. Well, then, what was my object ? I thus explain. Your correspondent, I doubt not, is actuated by a desire to promote the interests of the district, and he believes, probably, that by contemptuously referring to every little matter or circumstance in connection with the Nelson Government he best promotes his ends. I differ very materially, and I think we have seen enough to convince us that the Nelson folka can take any amount of hammering — hard as nails ! Now, I believe that folding our best efforts to obtain mackerel utterly unavailing, it is good policy to net as many sprats as possible ; and when little matters (useful in their way) are so mercilessly dealt with as by " Miner" in his first letter, I take alarm at the consequences likely to follow. A question, and I've done. Has reflection induced " Miner" to abandon the charge implied in his first epistle—something about providing work for relatives, &o. — I am, &c., TRAVEL! ■ a. 21st Oct., 1869.
