AUCKLAND.
(From the Auckland and Thames papers to the 30th Sept.) The starting of the splendid machine at the head of the Waiotahi, belonging to the Australasian Company, has given a fresh impetus to mining in that locality. The workings of the Dayspring Gold Mining Company are situated lower down the creek, immediately below the machine, and contain seven men's ground. Adjoining the company's ground is a perfect nest of claims, which all bear a good reputation. Among them are the Queen, Erin's Home, Bunker's Hill, Empress Eugenic, and Golden Harp. A very large reef, fourteen feet in thickness, has been laid bare on one of the main spurs which traverse the ground. In .the adjoining claim, the Golden Harp, a shaft has been sunk seventy-five feet, and a drive is now being put in at this level into the hill to catch the rich reefs found above. The lodes are expected to be crossed in a few feet more driving. The lode lately cut in the Balmoral has much increased in size, and now presents a very compact face of about two feet of excellent looking quartz. The Diggeru' Friend Gold Mining Company includes the claims formerly known as "the Star of Sebastopol, Empress Eugenic, Diggers 5 Friend, Queeu, and Kangaroo, about forty men's ground. All these claims have been partially prospected, and in all of them payable prospects have been obtained. A lode of blue quarts, ten feet in thickness, was crossed, and about 20 tons have been taken out. The stone looks well, and yields a good test. A very nice specimen-bearing leader has also been met, and is being followed in a cross drive. Work was commenced yesterday on the ground belonging to the Golden Call Gold Mining Company, Moanataiari Hill. The ground comprises the Golden Calf, Happy Home, Flirt, Batavia, and some small vacant pieces. From surveys made it is calculated that the underlie of the Golden Crown reef must traverse the Golden Calf and the adjoiniug claim, the Otago.
