HAWKE'S BAY.

The following amusing discussion took place at the adjourned meeting of the promoters of, and the subscribers to, the Hawke's Bay Gold Mining and Prospecting Company, which was held in the Provincial Council Chamber. The Chairman said he was glad that since the first meet-

ing, last week, as they had just heard, all the shares had been taken up. The company would be registered in Wellington, and till that was done, and Mr William M'Donnell and Mr Sweeney from the Thames gold field arrived, he could not see that the shareholders were in a position to take any further steps.— Mr Wilkinson : Mr Chairman, may I ask has anyone seen the rich gold-bearing quartz which was spoken of at last meeting? — The Chairman : I believe not. No one, so far as I can learn, has seen the " specimens." All that 1 can say is that I have not seen the specimens, and I have no personal knowledge of their value. The Chairman remarked that it was not profitable to sit there in silence gazing at each other. (Laughter.) If no one had anything to propose, he should declare the meeting at<ah end, — Mr Wilkinson again inquired whether anyone had seen the reputed specimens of auriferous quartz from Kaimanawa ranges. — The Chairman: No, I believe not. 1 have made all sorts of inquiries — by telegraph and otherwise ; but I can't find out that anyone has seen them, (Sensation,) — Mr Wilson : They will probably be sent down shortly. — (A Voice : By telegraph.)— Mr Wilkinson: I fear there is something more in this than meets the eye. Surely those who have subscribed their money have a right to know all about it. (Hear, hear.)— Mr Tanner : Does anybody know anything at all about it ? (Laughter.) — Mr Wilkinson: I do not think this ia a matter for joking, — The subject then dropped.
