As no advices were received from We'lington, before the prorogation of the General Assembly, with regard to the proposition of Mr Harrison to enable Westland to raise a loan of ..£50,000 for the purpose of constructing water-races on the Gold Fields, it was hoped that tho motion had quietly passed among the mass of business disposed of at the close of the session. This proved to be an erroneous impression, as we havo since learned that after the Otago Loan Bill was thrown out there was little hope of carrying a similar proposition on behalf of Westland, and the Government kept the motion so persistently at the bottom of the business-paper, it, amongst other " orders of the day," had to be discharged — that is, wiped out by a stroke of the pen, as if they never had an existence. to make provision for enabling the County of Westland to raise £50,000 by way of loan, for the purpose of constructing reproductive works upon the gold fields of the County, the said loan to be made a first charge upon the gold fields revenue of the said County j also., adjourned debate on the question that Major Brown have leave to introduce a Bill to constitute the County of Westland into a Province."
