Strenuous efforts were made by Captain Kerley to keep her off the north bench, but they proved unavailing, and she landed on the beach inside the channel and below whore the crate is placed. The monitors which crossed the Atlantic aud sailed round Cape Horn hail no siieh breastwork, and in those cases the openings through which access was gained to th«; interior were in the tops of the turrets themselves. TLe construction of monitors of any kind is certainly ft step in the right direction. But it would have been much better if, the questionable "improvement" Mr Reed has introduced had been omitted. An excellent sketch of the Cerberuß is given in the Illustrated London News of July 10. An order was received at Chatham Dockyard on the 12th of July from the Admiralty, directing the Cerberus to proceed with her relit in readiness for commission, as she is requhed to he despatched forthwith to Melbourne. The Cerberus was accordingly removed into one of the vacant docks at Chatham, where the work of preparing her for sea will 'be carried on with all despatch.
