Melbourne.— Tho Argus of the 14tli inst. reports : — Tn the import markets, business continues to maintain a quiet aspect, notwithstanding that a considerable amount of merchandise has been disposed of through the auction rooms. Breadstuff's evince no animation. The trade, however, being low in stock, are compelled to purchase, and their values are comparatively well sustained. Bi i st brands of Victorian flour find buyers at Ll3 10s to Ll4, according to quality. We hear of some 5000 bushels of wheat having been quitted at a trifie less money. Quotations have ranged at about 6s to 6s Id. A large demand has been experienced for maize, and at a shade under yesterday's quotations considerable sales havo been effected. S >me 8000 bushels at least, have been quitted at 4s 34d. Oats likewise have met with a very free demand. Sales have been made at 4s 3d for New Zealand ; and a shipment of 1300 bags Tasmauian was disposed of at 4s 2d net. The Bravo, arrived to-day, brings a cargo from Lyytelton. Under the hammer, the sales of candles havo been more extensive than for some time. Some 2500 boxes De Roubaix Jcnnar's were quitted at 10£ d for sound, and for about 1500 boxes slightly damaged, various brands, 9|d to lOd was accepted. Kerosene oil maintains great firmness. The result of to-day's sale was a matter of surprise, inasmuch as it was not expected that 2000 cases Devoe's, offered by auction, would have realised Is 11 Jd in oi.e line. We understand that some 2750 cases of Cozzens's will be offered for sale to-morrow. There has been more business doing in Dundee goods. Cirn sacks have met with purchasers at lls duty paid, and about a hundred bales of woolpacks were cleared off at 3s s.^d to 3s 6d. Teas are more inquired for; we hear of a line of 360 chests good ordinary congous having been placed at about Is 2d. Tobaccoes are moving off in fair parcels ; a line of nayy — a mixed shipmeut- was sold at full rates. We observe that about 250 packages, various descriptions, will be offered foi sale to-morrow forenoon at the bonds. Good hops are scarce and wanted, realising up to Is 6sd for fine samples 1868 Kent ; 183 bales snperior Tasmauian, 1869, will be disposed of to-morrow under the hammer. In liquids we note a fair inquiry for brandies. Hennessy's pale, in bulk, has been quitted at 7s 6d, and a parcel of fine old dark MarteU's has changed hands at a full price. Ten o.p. nun is got rid of at 3s 4^d, and 30 o.p. is saleable at 3s 9d. The same paper of the 15th inst. says : — There was very little doing in the import markets to-day. BreadstufFs still remain without animation ; but a parcel of 2500 bushels of Tasmanian wheat was sold at 5s 6d, and afterwards resold atfa slight advance. Flour has been moved off in trade parcels at from Ll3 10s to Ll4. Maize is in fair request, and firm, at 4s 3d to 4s 4d ; and oats continue in demand at from 4s 2d to 4s 3d for good samples. One hundred tons of pig iron were placed at L 5 10s, and a shipment of boop iron at a trifle under Ll2. Six hundred boxes of tin-plates also changed hands at full prices. There has been a rather brisk inquiry for salt, and further sales of coarse have taken place at L 5, and of fine at L 5 ss.
