IWe regret to loam that very slight hopes are now entertained of the p.s. Bruce being successfully launched from her present position* on the North Beach. She is not so seriously damaged, but since she slipped off the wa\s she has been lying with her decks exposed to the action of the sea, so that should a heavy surf oome home, of which there was every appearance last ni^ht, she will undoubtedly break up. The owner and contractor, with a large body of workmen, are still making every exertion to save her, and we only hope they may be successful. The s.B. Tararua, from Melbourne via New Zealand ports, is expected to make her appearance in this roadstead on Saturday. As she is under contract to carry the mails for England to Melbourne, she may be looked for well up to time She will take passen. ger3 for Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney. The ketch Elfin, Captain Shipinan, from Melbourne, was brought to the wharf on Tuesday morning by the ps. Despatch. She left Port Phillip Heads on Tuesday, the 22nd nit., and during the first part of the voyage had fair S. W. breezes, but during the latter part experiewed terrific gales and. high confused seas, which compelled her to be laid-to for two days. The land was made on Friday, and from Saturday to Monday was knocking about within 20 miles of the roadstead, which was reached on Tuesday morning, when she was brought in as above. The Elfin brinps a general cargo of merchandise for her owner, Mr W. J. Coates. The p.s. Lyttelton and p.s. Yarra, both from Hokitika, crossed the bar at ebb tide "yesterday. The latter took the ground in the river opposite the Magazine, but came to the wharf as the tide made last night.
