THE SOUTH BEACH.
(from our own correspondent. ) July 6. Some few weeks back mention was made of the christening at the top of the lagoon of a wheel owned by Campbell and party. This good example has been followed by other parties, viz., Burke and party and Hill and party, who have now wheels in full working order, and another is in course of construction by Davidson and party, which is expected to be completed in a fortnight. It can easily be imagined that the ground these parties are working must be very wet, or wheels would not be required ; in fact, it is situated on the beach, and the ground that is not being worked was abandoned formerly through the superabundance of water. It is very gratifying to notice the erection of these wheels, as they show that there" are men in the district who not only possess the ability, but have also that sterling requisite — energy — to overcome the difficulties where both skill and labor are reqnh'ed. Campbell and party's wheel is called "The Surprise;" Hill and party's "The Perfect Cure," and Burke and party's "The Piccaninny." Two extended claims have been taken v»p at the south, end of the Stoney Lead this week, and there is very little doubt that from time to time others will be chronicled. The claims on the old lead are all in first-class working order. Myley and party have been washing up, and splendid dirt have they had. If the run is not quite so wide as formerly, it is made up by the extra richness of the sand. Howieson and party are again ready with another paddock. A half-share in this claim was sold some days since for £150. Keith and party are washing up, and report speaks highly of their prospects, and that the paddock will be likely to vie with any that has yet been opened on the lead. If it proves so, they will indeed be very fortunate. All the other parties are stripping huge paddocks, and in the course of time will have their reward, for although some paddocks may yield rather better than others, yet f>r richness the whole of the old claims are much about alike. Leaving the present workings and going north — The Unicorn Company have set in ' to work. Instead of being compelled to go back to the beach and commence a tunnel, they have made arrangements with the All Nations, and have commenced a branch tunnel from their main one. It is thought they will be into their ground in six weeks ; shares are selling for £100. The All Nations have been washing up their first paddock, and the men are in high glee with the result, which it is expected will be handsome ; shares are selling at from £250 to £300. The Homeward Bound have nearly completed their branch tunnel. They expect to be in their ground by the end of the week ; Bhares, £150. The shareholders in these large claims have constructed a first class track from the beach to their claims, which really makes a walk up to the workings pleasant and agreeable —an example which might be profitably followed by others. Rugg and party, having amalgamated with M'Kinlay and party, for the purpose of taking in a tunnel from the beach, have made a commencement. Nothing further is very likely to be know n about the continuation of the Stoney Lead north for some months, as tunnels 1000 ft. long will require labor, time, and capital before they are completed. The Leviathan Company have had their first washing up this week, and it is to be hoped with satisfactory results. They have a splendid way of working, and it is a pleasure to witness the water running over five boxes, carrying the sand with it anH leaving the gold deposited on the baize. This company has also secured ground on the supposed line of the Stoney Lead. •
