May 26. A large public meeting was held to-day to consider the present high price of gas. The, Mayor was in the chair. A deputation was formpd to wait on the City Council to agitate for getting the gas supply into the hands pf the Council. Wellington, May 26. Several specimens frpm quartz reefs in this, neighborhoofi have &een. submitted to Dr Hector to be tested for gold. It is hoped that a payable reef will b,e found. _, m ' May 27. Mr Travers announced himself thismorning as a candidate for the city at next election. His platfppm is selt reliance.
