THE SOUTH BEACH.

- — *» (from* our own correspondent. ) April 30 The prognostications that the South Beach would recover from the lethargy that it had fallen into during the last tliree yearns is daily being fulfilled. Every thing betokens a healthy state 4 , and every time the Beach is traversed fresh signs of prosperity meet the eye ; deep tail-races being formed and extensive fluming erected, and it only requires a. little moie patience, to all6w : the ;; men to get;into working order, when they will be enabled to thoroughly controvert the idea that all ' the gold had been got thafr was considered' payable. These indefatigable , and prising men, the Leviathian Water Race Company, have now reached the beach, and for the first time the water out of the Saltwater Creek is to be seen pouring through their huge race into the" South Pacific Ocean ; but shortly I shall have riiore parti 3,, • culafly whert^he' cnristening takes -placed which is expected in the course of the next fortnight. • The Great Extended Water Race Company are making great, progress, being close to the Nelson Creek. This race is intended to be carried nearly to the Cemetery, where the company have secured some ground. Some" slight idea of the value of this race may be formed from the knowledge that it commands upwards of fourteen miles of country, and' is ; so high that it can. be conveyed even over the Grey to the North Beach. This speaks volumes as to its value and the permanency of work which it ensures to the persevering and enterprising proprietors. The United Company, comprising the Homeward Bound and the All -Nations,; who have been engaged for many months' taking in a tunnel from the beach nearly opposite White's store, have had many difficulties to contend against. Too much praise cannot be bestowed on them for the manner in which they have persevered when many men would have long since despaired of success. There are hopes now that in the course of a fortnight they will have attained their object of striking the Stoney Lead, which.it is sincerely to be trusted they will do — in fact, rumor says now that they have got prospects. Another work of "magnitude is being constructed by Dowling and Co. They purpose sluicing some ground at the back of Paroa. They will obtain water from the Great Extended. The tail race is. to come out between Paroa an.& the;garden. Another party is reported to have taken up a claim at the south end of the Stoney Lead. The Road Board are making a road alongside of the back terrace from M'Donagh's Junction Hotel to White's gtore. This will form a very agreeable promenade for those in Greymouth who wish to enjoy a pleasant walk. J The; continual inroad of the sea has caused many changes to be made during the last two years, both as regards the tramroad and the beach road. Both of these <have been forced back several times, and if the sea continues to advance as it has done lately, a matter of, considerable importance will have to be promptly dealt with, for the Cemetery-will have to be removed. It is better to anticipate this danger and find a safe resting place for the departed rather than in the course of two or tliree years be compelled to remove them. It is to be hoped that the Municipal Corporation of Greymouth will lose no time befoie they institute* proper inquiries as to the permanency of the present cemetery. Let it not be supposed that there is no danger because .ihVsurf has not yet reaiiched the foot of 1 the terrace; for if the sea continues as it has done lately it will soon undeceive us all. Let our resting place be in a more permanent situation. ■ V, s :
