The fire in Sturt street, Ballarat, on the Bth inst., has caused much loss to Mr A. Craig, the owner of the Prince A^red Hotel. Mr Craig had the building insured for L 250 in the Alliance Company, and the stocks and furniture in the Imperial Company for L 300; but this will not nearly cover the actual loss. The stock was very extensive, and had lately been increased ; and, besides, Mr Craig had a large quantity of scrip and other valuable documents, all of which are gone. A melancholy accident occuired at Steiglitz, the other morning, by which a miner named John Ederfiekl, working in the Salamander Company's claim, met with his death. From the evidence taken before Dr Leaghy, it appears that the deceased was tamping a charge of powder, which exploded during the operation, smashing both legs of the unfortunate deceased. When found by one of the other workmen he spoke two words only, after being brought to the turf ace, ana then almost immediately expired. A correspondent of the Hamilton Sp'Ctutor, writing from Heywood on the 28th ult., describes a murderous assault : — "A wheelwright named Frederick Slater, having quarrelled with his wife, pursued her up the street in the direction of the police station, and, overtaking her, commenced beating her in a savage manner with a shovel. He struck the unfortunate woman three times, and so violent were the blows that with the last one the shovel was broken in two places. Constable Reilly, who happened to be near, grappled with the furious man, and prevented him doing further mischief, although at the time Rpeilly believed the woman to be dead. Dr Brewer, of Por > , land, dressed the poor creature's wounds, and she still lies in a precarious siate. Slater was taken to Portland on Sunday j afternoon, and being brought before the bench, was remanded for seven days."
