NEW RIVER DISTRICT.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) RUTHERGLEN, April 9. Mining affairs at the Eightmiie arjj in a most flourishing state just now, the claims on the lead being in splendid working order, and yielding satisfactory returns to the fortunate shareholders. Independent, however, of these claims, some new ground has been opened on a small flat' immediately below the lower township. Very good prospects are reported to have been obtained, so much so that it, has caused a rush once more to the Eight-mile^. „ It would, however, be well to caution men at ii distance that the ground on which the prospect was obtained is of a very small extent, and will not hold. more; than a.few claims, and that every inch of it has long since been taken up. Of course it is impossible to say' whether any more ground equally good is to be got— time alone will solve that question, but there is no doubt that the large number of fresh hands that have wended their way to the Eight-mile during the last ten days will thoroughly examine the, other small flats at the bends of the creek till it reaches the New River. Another rash to Maori Greet took place at the beginning of the. week, but It resulted very unsatisfactorily, and iraa declared of no account. ManukaU Flat still holds a few parties. Water is very scarce here, and if it were, only more jtfentiful the men would be able to do very well, as it is they are obliged to take advantage of rainy weather to wash with. . A good few men are scattered in the back country and around Mosquito Creeki They find the stores at Manukau of great convenience, as it saves them from & long walk to the Eight-mile Terrace, where the principal township is in that part. Business there is in ainost flourishing ' state ; in fact, it can boa3t of being more so than any other place on the cOast. Two more publican's licenses have lately been taken oat^ and that is a pretty good sign that the township is in a far different condition tbai a correspondent pictured it after Christmas. There is one great drawback to itj however, for> although most businesses axe represented here, yet there is no medical man nearer than Greymouth or the Greenstone. There- is no doubt that if one was settled there, that by industry and exertion, and attending periodically at Liverpool Bill's, Moari G ; ully, Manukau Flat, he would, ensure to.3iiniself a,handsome compensation f Or his labor, and bestow an inestimable boon on the public at large, for the late melancholy death of John M'Dunnaghau, who was so universally respected by all who knew him, shows the imperativeness of having medical aid at hand, as there is a possibility, had such been the case, we should not now be mourning his loss. Should there be any gentleman desirous of obtaining a connection, there is no doubt that a fine opening now exists here, for the population is certain tq be .found, in this locality for many years to come. ;
