The Nelson Provincial Government have started a novel proposition for the avowed purpose of practising economy — v'z., the reduction of the number of members of the Provincial Council from twenty-nine to nineteen. A Bill for the purpose has been prepared, and is to be introduced into the Council at its next meeting. This is to be brought about by the ie-division of the Province into eleven Electoral Districts, to be named as follows : — l, the City of Nelson ; 2, Suburban-north ; 3, Wainiea-eafct - } 4, Waimea-south ; 5, Waimea-west j 6, Motueka ; 7, Amuri ; 8, Golden Bay ; 9, Buller; 10, Charleston ;• and 11, Grey. The proportion in which these new districts are to be represented in the Council is certaiuly more equitable than that now in force, and will do much to recommend the scheme to the minds of the electors. The city of Nelson is to be represented by four members, the Buller District by two members, the Charleston District by one menibei*, and the Grey District by two members. Instead of the Grey Valley, Cobden, Brighton, and Charleston being, as at present, included in one district, the Charleston District, represented by its one member, is proposed to extend from the Razorback north to the south boundary of the Buller River. The new Grey District, represented by its two members, is bounded as follows : — "By a line drawu due east from Razorback Point to. the top of the Paparoha range ; thence by a line following the said range to Mount Buckland ; thence by a line goingsouth-eastwardjfollowingthe whole length of the southern boundary of the Buller district ; thence by the line in continuation of the eastern boundary of the Buller district to the middle of Lake Sumner; thence by the boundary line between the Provinces of Nelson and Canterbury, aud the County of Westland, to the mouth of the River Grey ; and thence by the coast Hue to the boundary of the Charleston District, between the Rivera Okari and Totara." This includes the whole Valley of the Grey in ono electoral district, and will permit of its beiug represented by local men, which it never has been hitherto. It would be premature to discuss the question further until it is brought before the Council ; but so far as appeal's on the face of it we think the scheme a very equitable one, and one which will be very generally approved of, outside of the city of Nelson;
