Melbourne.— The Argus of the 4th instreports : — There is little to repcrt of an improving nature regarding the import markets generally. Business, however, is again assuming a more settled aspect, and though it is still far from satisfactory, there is a promise of increased trade for the remainder of the week. In flour we note a decided improvement; sales have been effected at Ll2 15s to Ll3for good Victorian brands, and we hear of Ll3 havmg been offered and declined for a considerable parcel of old flour. Wheat has been disposed of by auction at 5s 7d to 5s Bd. 3h j decline in maize has drawn attention to the market, and we understand that all offering under 4s 6d to 4s 7d has been taken off, and holders are now very firm, asking 4s Sd. In oats there is nothing doing. There is a better inquiry for sngar, and numerous trade parcels, to the extent of 1000 bags, have been sold at L3B to L4O ?or yellow to good yellow crystals. The favorable feeling in regard to fine teas is still maintained ; we hear of a line, equal to about a thousand chests, having changed hands on private terms. Negotiations are also pending, which it is said are likely to lead to the sale of an entire cargo recently arrived. A demand has set in for soda crystals, and a few shipments have b?en closed for at L 8 to LS 2s 6d ; the latter figure was offered at the close of business hours for an invoice to arrive, without being responded to. Kerosene oil is in very free request, cond higher rates are being obtained. Small lots of Downer's realise 2s 2£d. A small shipment of Aniei icau cane-seat chairs has been placed at ten per cent, advance on invoice. Brandy is in slightly better favor. Hennessy's pale in bulk has been quitted at 7s 9d, and a shirment of twenty-five quarters of pale Martell's 1864 brandy has been quitted at a very extreme figure.
