Her Majesty's ship Brisk touched there on the 2(sth of October, on her way home from Australia, and on the 28th a party of young officers left the vessel to go on a shooting excursion, and among them was Sub-Lieutenant Charle3 Ogle Robertson. The sport was exciting, and the I last-named gentleman became separated from the party, and was no more seen alive. It would seem that he became exhausted and lay down, went to sleep, and did^ not wake again. His body was discovered "on the following day. His face did not denote any suffering ; his flask of spirits and water was scarcely touched ; his gun was in his hand, and a bag of game by hi 3 side. He was buried with military honors. — Argus. The clipper schoon-r Spray, Captain Ruxton, arrived in Lyttelton harbor on the 21st ult, from Greymouth. On the 22nd ult, as the Betsy Douglas, on a return trip from Pigeon Bay, was entering Lyttelton heads through a very heavy sea, she was struck by a wave, which carried away her port paddle-box, a boat, smashed the bulwarks, &c, and unfortunately swept overboard a passenger, Mr Porter, of Akaroa, who, being very sea sick, was leaning over the rail at the time. Captain M'Lean at once threw a life-buoy overboard, and brought the vessel to the wind, but the man sank almost immediately. The mate, who was steering, also had a narrow escape, being washed overboard, but held on to the tiller lines and pulled himself on deck again. — Press The inquiry into the loss of the St. Vincent was held on the 23rd u,lt. The decision wa3, that the ship was lo3t through the captain's error of judgment in uofc running into Cloudy Bay or back to Wellington. The mace offered to pilot the ship into Cloudy Bay, but the captain would not agree to it.
