HAWKERS.
(To the Editor. of the Grey River Argui.) Sir—" Mr Fairplay," whose letter appeared in. your paper a few days since, together with most respectable tradesmen, have a great down on hawkers and ppdlars. Now, Ido not see why a man may not dispose of his goods in his own way, provided he does nofc interfere with the rights and liberties of others ; but as ther inhabitants of our town in general, and the business people in particular, are heavily taxed for the benefit of the whole, I hold it is only just that hawkers should come in for their share of the burden of the taxes, as well as their share of the benefit derived from the expenditure of the moneys raised by taxation. If my premises be just — viz., that all who participate in the benefits derived from the expenditure of moneys raised by taxation should have their share of the burden of those taxes — it then follows that not only the numerous hawkers and pedlars that swarm our streets, but the legion which visit our port, especially by the Nelson steamers, should in all justice contribute to the Municipal revenue. I therefore hope our Town Council will ere long take this matter into consideration, and equitably adjust the burden of taxation. Yours, &c., Chaw.es WOolcook* Greymouth, February 8> 1869.
