(from thk christchurch papers.) Wellington, Jan. 29. The Wanganui papers received to-night contain fuller particulars of the skirmish on Tuesday morning, but nothing new. Colonel Whitmore has weeded the Constabulary, and shipped sixty of the worst characters by the Sturt to Waikato. The Chronicle understands that several members of the Assembly are about to memorialise the Governor to call an early meeting of Parliament. The Phoebe and several other vessels are detained through stress of weather. The Gazette contains a proclamation of the Imperial Act removing doubts as to the appointment of Legislative Councillors, also a commission to inquire into the administration of the Waste Lands in Otago, in terms of the resolution of the Assembly. The Government intends to enforce the penalties against the Panama Company for breach of contract, the penalties to be deducted from the subsidy due. The Governor goes . to Wairarapa to attend the races. The Duke cf Buckingham has declined to comply with the resolution of the Assembly relative to the retention of the troops, which must leave in the Himalaya. The Hon. J. Hall goes to Canterbury in the Phoebe this evening, and Mr Gray, Inspector of Post Offices, proceeds south iv the same vessel. Captain Benson and the staff of the P..N.Z. and A.R.M. Company return to England in the Ruahine, which is advertised to leave Wellington at, the end of March. There is great competition for the agency of M'Meckan's steamers. Mr Bishop, the managing director of the N.Z.S. Company, has gone to Melbourne in the hope of securing it for his company. All the ministry are now away. Mr Stafford being the only one here. The Hon. J. Hall's resignation is again spoken of. January 31. The Hon. A. Domett and Messrs Reynolds and Strode, have been appointed as a Commission •to inquire into the Administration of Waste Lands in Otago, in terms of the resolution of both houses last session. Mr Reynolds was nominated by the Provincial Government. Mr Domett goes to Otago this week. The Phoebe sailed this morning at last. February 1. Mr Richmond returned from Napier to-day. H.M.S. Blanche sails for Wanganui tonight or to-morrow with Commodore Lambert, who is going to visit the Front. A few laborers being required for the wharf this morning, it was advertised, when over one hundred applied. Dr Featherston has gone to Otaki, for the purpose of attending the Land Court there. Major-General Chute and staff arrived at Auckland on the 19th ult.
