Mr N. Chevalier, the distinguished artist whose celebrated sketches of Australian and New Zealand scenery are now widely known (says the Colonist), left Wellington by the Alhambra en route to join the Duke of Edinburgh's ship, the Galatea, which left England some time ago on a cruise round the world. At the express desire of the Prince, this talented gentleman is now on his way to join r the Galatea, and will accompany his "Royal ; Highness in bis tour through India, the Indian Archipelago, Australasia, and lastly 1 New Zealand. We learn from the Wettport Times that M'Kenzie and party have this week struck t gold on the south end of Hatter's Terrace, at 150 feet in from the face. There are still . several parties tunnelling and sinking in the i same neighborhood, hopeful as to their pros- ' pects. On the same terrace parties who have already struck gold are erecting substantial ' huts and constructing water-races, and there r is likely to be soon settled there a numerous i population. Among some of the parties on i Giles' and Hatter's Terrace, there was a bet [ taken as to the relative quality of the ground c on the two terraces, and from a pannikin of " dirt from Hatter's Terrace twenty one grains were panned off, while the same quantity ', from Giles' Terrace yielded from four to five ) grains — not a bad comparative indication of the value of some claims on Hatter's,
