GREAT FIRE IN TIMARU.
THE TOWN NEARLY DESTROYED(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ) Christchurch, Wednesday. Yesterday afternoon at three o'clock a fire broke out in Cain and Munro's premises, at the north end of Timaru, and burnt furiously before a strong northwester, till half-past six o'clock, destroying all the principal buildings of the town. Among the rest may be named the premises of Muaro, furniture warehouse ; Knight, painter ; Wood, saddler ; Solomon, draper ; Seymour, watchmaker ; Jacobs, watchmaker ; Erskine, grocer ; Watkins, chemist ; Olarkson and Turnbull, general storekeepers ; Beldy, barber ; Cutler, chemist ; Horton and Belfield's printing office (Timaru Herald); Bilton, bookseller ; Byrne's private residence ; Stubbs and King's butoher's shop; Morgan, baker; Mountford, photographer ; Melton's stables and residence ; Fraser, butcher ; Pogonowski, barber ; Macrae's Club Hotel ; Stubbs and King's butcher's shop No. 2 ; Post Office, Telegraph Office, and the Bank of New Zealand. No lives have been lost, as far as has yet been ascertained, but very little property has been saved.
