Kennedy, from J«elson and Westport, arrived about this lime, and crossed inwards, followed shortly afterwards by the Dispatch with the brig >lagnet, from Melbourne, j n tow. The channel was"fo»nd po be in' splendid condition, perfectly straight out, with over twelve feet of water some time before full ti«e. The best evidence of this is that the Magnet was drawing 10 feet 6 inches, and abe crossed without touching. Tbe ps. ihspatcli afterwards towed the brig Clarendon to sea, and returned to port. She will, no doubt, make a good ran round the other ports, and is announced to leave this roadstead for Melbourne direct, <>n the 10th mat. Cheap return tickets, «XMnduig ovei a month, will be issued by this vessel, in order to enable passengers to spend their Christmas holidays in Melbourne. The s.B. Tararua, from Melbourne, arrived at Dunedin yesterday. § The b.B. Kennedy, Captain Whitwell, arrived in tbe river yesterday morning, from Wwitport and Nejson. She left the latter port 'at 9 a\rn. on; Saturday, but met with very severe weather through the Straits, and en Sunday lay under shelter of Farewell Spit. She arrived at Westport on Monday night, at 10 o'clock, and, in consequence of the severe weather which prevailed on the coast, was detained in port for several days.
