THE BURIAL OF PAUBERS.

(To the Editor qf the Qr^y River Argus.) Sib — Reluctantly I again refer to the unpleasant subject, not so much on account of Mr Sampson's explanation as to give one. foy bringing this painful business before your readers. At the time Mr Sampson collected that subscription he stated the amount required for giving the deceased, what he called a decent burial, would, besides what was allowed by Government, amounts to from L 2 10s to L 2 I4s. Knowing thai more then that amount was collected, and. what was said about the minister's fee, I felt it my duty to bring the matter before the public,' not from any ill-feeling, but to give those reverend gentlemenfan opportunity of repudiating that which might have become a gross scandal, had the statement been allowed unchecked to have got into circulation. My object was also to give Mr Sampson a chance of clearing himself from any imputation that might have bee.n cast upon him. Seeing by your issue of'the Ist instant that both parties have taken advantage of'the same, and having said what I think quite sufficient xvpon the subject, I am content lo let the matter drop. I should like to say a word or two in reference to a letter signed "" A Citizen.?' I cannot see how he can conjecture my evidence to be hearsay, dr contradict my statement in toio, when Mr Sampson does not attempt to do so, unless he be one of the interested parties who prepared eh> coffin, which Mr Sampson speaks of in his letter. I think it would have emanated better from " Citizen'! had he given an explanation instead of a contradiction to my statements, as he says he has a thorough knowledge of all the facts, possibly something more might have come out. As to my being ready to proclaim myself a subscriber and not assisting to lower the coffin, I can only say that had "Citizen" imparted his knowledge to "Enquirer! or anyone els£ of the fact that some one was wanted to assist to lower the coffin, I doubt ndt but some one would have been .found to liave done so. I am, Ac., n x, 1" ' Enquirer. ' Greymputh, Dec. 2, 1868. ~ '" ■
