THE Grey River Argus. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1868.
The nomination which took place yesterday of candidates for the representation .of Greymouth in the Couyty Council niust be regarded with feelings of satisfaction. It is satisfactory to find that the indifference which was at one time displayed by the citizens as to the result of this .contest has passed away, and that it has now been entered upon with energy, and a considerable display of earnestness on the part of the candidates to win the coveted pri^e. Four good aud able men have been induced to offer tlieir services to the electors, viz., Messrs,. E, Wickes, H, H, Lahman, P. Comiskey, and W, H. Harrison, all of whom would make most desirable representatives, in. whose hands the best interests of the town might very safely be entrusted ; but as only two are to be returned, the electors are to be called upon to makg a selection from them, on Thursday next, should they all resolve to go to the poll. Of this there is very little doubt, and a most exciting contest has now been entered upon. The proceedings of the public meeting held last evening gave ample evidence of the amount of interest which is taken in this election struggle, and of the high opinion which is entertained by the great buik of the electors of the qualifications of Mr. Harrison to represent them in the Council. About this there can be no doubt. His past services to the town, both in the Council and the Assembly, have been warmly appreciated by the citizens, and certainly entitle him to be returned on this occasion. His past political career has been marked by an unswerving attachment to the interests of his constituents, and a careful attention to their wants. There can, we think, be no doubt that his past services will be recognised by the electors in this contest, and that this will be shown in a very decided manner on the election day. Of the qualifications of the other three candidates we cannot yet speak in a decided manner. They are all as yet untried in politics j and until they have given the electors an opportunity of judging of their political opinions, it would be premature to form a hasty judgment.
