Purinsj the past two days the bar has been rendered unworkable by the heavy surf which has been rolling home on it, driven up by the strong south-westerly blow which lasted on Monday night and Tuesday. Thig heavy sea must have prevailed all along the coast, as none of the coasting steamers have yet put in an appearance. They may now be looked for early, as the fine calm weather which we enjoyed yesterday must cause the sea to go down rapidly. The ss Wallabi, from the north, is expected to-day, and is announced to sail for Westport and Wanganui to-morrow. During the period between the 10th Octo.r ber and the sth November inclusive. 30 ships, ,of an aggregate tonnage of 19,383 tons, arrived at Port Phillip from British and foreign ports. During the same period there left Port Phillip 33 vessels of an aggregate tonnage of 20,925t0n5. A new ocean steam route has just com, xnenced. On the 13th alt. the Pacific 3team Navigation Company, who for many years have successfully carried on the mail service on the west coast of South America, despatched from Liverpool the steamer Pacrfic, 3000 tons and 500 horse-power, with accomr modation for about 150 first-class passengers, for Rio Janeiro, Montevideo, and Valparaiso, calling at St. Nazaira, Lisbon, and St Vincent. Desirous of direct communication •with England, the Chilian Government opened negotiations with the Pacific Steam Company for the performance .of a special mail service, and a short time back the contract was concluded, the present being the first voyage under it. The contract with the Chilian Government is to perform the voyage, both out and home, in forty-two days, injduding all stoppages, and the Pacific fully carried out this speed in her homeward passage. At first the service is to be only once in two months, but in a short time, it is said, a new and splendid fleet of steamers of 2500 tons will be ready, when the communication will he monthly, taking passengers from Liverpool, &c, to Rio Janeiro, Monte Video, and Valparaiso direct, and thus avoiding the annoyance of transhipment, &c, via Panama, for those bound for the West Coast. Messrs H. Griffiths, Tate, and Co., are the London agents of the line.— British Trade Journal.
