There has been a terrible increase of crime in the city of New York. The Herald publishes a list of the murders, i manslaughters, shooting and stabbing affrays, and suicides, within the city during the last two months. It occupies two columns closely printed in the smallest type. It is a mystery where all the money comes from to pay the expenses of the Presidential election. Certainly the candidatea do not furnish the means. Immense sums are being expended all over the States, and if *g( correct return of the expenditure could.,, te made, it would ' astonish sober-minded people — a class decidedly in the minority in America. The civil servants, it is generally understood, have to contribute largely to the expenses of the campaign. It is a sort of black mail which might cost them their situations to disregard. A rumor is current that the post office employes have been notified that one and a half per cent, of their salaries this month will be required for political purposes ; but nothing is known as to how the money is to be spent, and whether it is to be devoted to the Democratic or Republican interest.
