The Advertiser says : — "A very severe shock of earthquake, the first of the kind felt by the people at the Thames, occurred about half-past 12 o'clock last night, and Was of several minutes' duration, The earthquake was of a very severe character* and during the time it lasted the wooden tenements were felt to totter in an unmistakably alarming manner, causing serious apprehensions to.cross the minds of those conscious of the shock. The motion was felt for about two minutes and a half — violent at first, and then a prolonged faint shock ; the sea at the same time, and for hour* afterwards, maintaining a very disturbed violent sound. The night; had been dull, and the tide was observed to flow several feet beyond high- water mark some time prior to the period of high tide given in the tide table ; and when at its height considerable damage was done by the washing away of timber an,d merchandise placed beyond highwater mark on the beach. Several places near the beach were flooded and one or two boats washed from their moorings, but, owing to the lateness, of the hour, we \ere unable to ascertain the full extent of the damages sustainedj by this unusuaj occurrence f
