GREY ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of the Board was held yesterday afternoon, at the Fire Brigade Hall. Present — Messrs Fox (jn the chair), Messrs Leach, Hamilton, O'Connor, and Barnhill. The minutes of the last meeting wers read and cpnfirmed, A letter was read from the County Secretary's office, Hokitika, stating the amount of surplus revenue payable to the Board for the past month to be J2OO, which would be forwarded shortly. A letter, deferred from a previous meeting, from the County Secretary's office, stating that they had received an application from Mr Montgomery for protection for a trade over the Ten-chain Reserve, on the Arnold River, for tracking boats by horses, and levying tolls on the track. The County Secretary asked thq Board to say if the protection should be gra.nt§d. I Mr Fox. said the whole population of i the Arnold district was averse to granting this application. Besides, the idea was quite Utopian ; it was impossible to use, horses in tracking boats up the Arnold River. He moved^-' ' That the application cannot be entertained, as it is opposed to the interests of the inhabitants, and would, interfere with the working of the Arnold River by boats." Messrs Hamilton and Barnhill were, of opinion that the matter should b§ entertained, and every encouragement given to a man who was willing to tjy tq open up the river, as he suggested. Mr Leach was surprised that no opposition had been made to the application from the boatmen on the river or residents. He seconded the motion. After a discussion, the motion .was negatived. The report of the District Engineer stated that so far as completed the work, on the Arnold Road had been executed in accordance with the specifications, Attached was a statement of the amount and value of the work done, — Received and adopted. A letter was read from Messrs Card Brothers., for protection for a track from their lower store on the New River to, Liverpool Bill's Gully, about 13 miles long. They were willing to sell the same to the Board at any time at a valuation, to be fixed by arbitration.' The Secretary was instructed to answer, stating that protection would be recom* mended to the County Chairman, subject to the Engineer's approval, and the. Board reserved the right to purchase the aajne at any time they may think proper. Mr Leach moved— " That this Board recommend the withdrawal for the present of the whole of the block known as No. 2, sections 14 and 16, as it considers, looking at the extraordinary action of the Waste Lands Board, any further sales of land would be injurious to the district and the mining community generally." Mr Fox seconded the motion, which was, Qarrie d, The Secretary was instructed to write to the Town Clerk, requesting a decided answer from the Borough Council respecting the resolution of the Board, of the 18th Sept., relative, to the balancesheet then handed showing n a de.bit balance of £1646 lls sd, as the Board now wished to know if the Borough Council intend to acknowledge these liabilities, as it is advisable that some immediate, arrangement should be made with the, creditors. The Board then adjourned.
