GREY ROAD BOARD.
The usual weekly meeting of the. Road Board was hejd yesterday, at the Fire Brigade Hall, Present — Messrs Fox (in the chair), L.each, Barnhill, and Hamilton. The minutes of the Jas,t meeting were •read and confirmed. A letter was rgad from. Mr Rpchfort, County Engineer, requesting "a monkey, chain, and nippers t0 be sent to Hokitika, as soon as possible.. He had telegraphed for it two mantes, ago, but it had not arrived. It was stated that when th§ monkey came here the Board had to pay the freight. It was resolved— " That the Board is perfectly willing to return thq monkey, provided thg Hqki^ika Corporar tion pay the freight. Messrs Kilgour and Perotti wrote, calling attention to the dostpuctipi) of the; public road and private property which was taking place by the course the-Saltr water Creek was now taking, and requesting them to remedy the evil by diverting the course of the river, at a poigt to be approved oi by the Engineer." It was resolved—" That the Board cannot entertain the applicatioij, as its present financial position will np.t allow of any^ further expenditure, but that theservices of their Engineer will be tendered to Messrs Kilgour and'Perotti. The Town Clerk pyo tern wrote stating that the Borpugh Council could not entertain the accounts referred to them by the Board until they received a legal opinion thergon. The matter was allowed to remain in abeyance. A letter was read from the manager ftf the Rutherglen tramway, in answer to the offer of the Board, that the proprietors were willing to accept the sum of .£SOO for their line/: terms cash. The letter was received. A telegram , which was received about an h,our after the last meeting, was read from Mr Bonar. It was to the effect that the statement of the Board showed that they had incurred liabilities to the amount of £2000, which was wholly disproportionate* to the sum. they could expect toreceiver from the surplus revenue, and he therefore directed their attention to his previous letters cautioning them with regard their expenditure, and requesting them not tot incur any further liabilities until they were prepared to pay their present debts. A letter was read, which had been sent in reply, showing the financial position oi the Board, and that they were in deb^ qnly, tq th,e an^pun^ 0,1 £$% }s. lid. After a conversation, ' Mr Leach moved, " That the Board incur no further liabilities until the present; financial difficulty was overcome." Mr Fox seconded the motion, which was carried. ? Reports were read 'from '4&ev- District Engineer with regard to survey of the* Paroa Road ; from the committee of the Board appointed tp consider the award o^ the arbitrators on the Rutherglen tram-; way, recommending that a sum of .£SOO be offered for the fine ; and from a committee of the whole Board, with respec^ to the salaries of their officers, agreeing; to pay the engineer £150 a-year, and the secretary $10" 0. The. reports were adopted. Mr Fox moved, " That'Mr A. Guinness be appointed solicitor to the Road Board, at a salary of £56. per. Mr Barnhill seconded the motion, which was, carried by the chairman's casting vote. The Board adjourned to, Thursday next at 2 p.m.
