Monday, September 7(Before W. H. Bevell, Esq., K.M.) Drunkards.— Richard for having been drunk and disorderly, was fined ss, or 24 hours' imprisonment. Thomas Mills, for a similar offence, was fined 10s, or 24 hours' imprisonment. There "was a further charge against the prisoner for an indecent exposure, for which he was cautionejd. Wni. Wilson was charged with having been drunk and disorderly, and very abusive on the s.treet while the inhabitants were; gojrsg to church on Sunday night. It appeared that he had been a patient in the Hospital, and was discharged on Sunchvy. The MagdaI trate said such conduct was highly discreditable — after being in the Hospital, at the public expense, to come out, get drunk, and annoy the people on the street. He would take care that the prisoner did not receive the benefits of that institution in future, - Eine,d l.Qs,, or 48 hours' imprisonment, Assault. — Joseph Moore was charged, on remand, with having assaulted Mary Ann M'Carthy,, on, the Ist instant. The complainant said that on the, evening of the Ist instant she was in the Shotover Hotel, when the prisoner came in. She was suffering from rheumatics and was lying on the sofa, when he asked her a question. She answered, when he struck her a blow on the forehead with his hand, which made her insensible for a quarter of an hour. He only struck one blow* because some men who were present removed him, but he held on by her hair, | and pulled some of it cut. T.he_ prisoner was under the influence of drink at the time. On two previous occasions she had laid informations against the prisoner for having assaulted her. She did not suffer much from the effects of the assault. — George Barr, who was present at the time playing cards in the room, said he did not see the blow struck, but he believed the blow was struck. He heard no words pass while he. was sitting in the room, and did not seje the; defendant touch the com- : plainant. In the course of examination by the Magistrate-, he extracted froni this witness the fact that he was sitting at a table with the parties in this case playing cards when Mrs M'Carthy screamed, and Mrs Lecher came in and asked if any man would see a woman struck. He then seized hold of prison er^ and told him to fight with a man if he wanted to fight. Mrs Lechejr said aihe was bringing some beer into the room when she saw prisoner strike M'Carthy a blow on the nose, which brought the blood, then pushed her back on the sofa and struck her on the face again. She called for help, and three men who were in the room seized, prism er. He said he would have complainant's life, if she threatened him with the law again. Harry Kenrick, Clerk to the Bench, proved that on the 23rd December, and 16th March last, the prisoner was fined .£5, or one month's imprisonment, for having assaulted the complainant. TJhe prisoner said the case was brought against him for spite ; but he did not deny striking the woman. When he took a drop of liquor he went mad. T.he Magistrate sajid that was an aggravation of the crime, and for this assault, which was not a very serious one,, he would be fined £2, or 14 days' imprisonment. On the adjourned charge, of having assaulted a, constable in the discharge of his duty (while arresting the prisoner) he was fined £5, or four months' imprisonment. For having destroyed the uniform of the apprending constable, he was fined in a further sum, of £2, or 14 days' imprisonment
