A Californian paper says; — "It ifi stated in our telegraphic despatches that a contract has been given to Brighani Young by the Union Pacific Railroad Company for the grading of that portion of the Overland Railroad situated between, Echo Canon and Salt Lake City, and that "work is to be commenced at once." This movement indicates extraordinary efforts upon the part of the Eastern Company to extend the road rapidly towards California. Echo Canon is about 400 miles this side, or west of the present terminus of the Pacific Railroad, and some sixty miles from Salt Lake City. It is not unlikely now that the railroad will be completed, and cars running as far west as Salt Lake City within twelve months. It was announced a short time since that the Union Pacific Company had contracted for the extension of the road some 300 miles west of its then terminus, which, with the present contract with Brigham Young, probably extends to Salt Lake City. The Union Company can, with the assistance of Brigham Young, grade the road from its present terminus to Salt Lake City, and by the time the grading is completed the track will have been laid one-half, the distance, The balance of the track can be put down in the winter or parly in spring. On this side, the Central Pacific will from present indications, finish their road to within 356 or 400 miles of Salt Lake City. It is quite safe, therefore, to say, from present indications, that within twelve months the railroad to. the Atlantic States will not lack more than 400 miles of completion.
