They would, however, remark that with so large and valuable an Estate as the Coalfield at the threshold of Greyinonth, which, if properly worked, must be a source of incalculable wealth to the district, it is scarcely possible to suppose that such an obstacle to its commerce will lony be allowed to prevail. If the interests of the owners of tug boats shall be found -antagonistic to the trading of the Company, it will be requisite that the Company . shall provide tug vessels of their own. The Directors desire to allude to anothe source of profit wh ich is too important to be lost sight of. The Country above the mines in the Valley of the Grey, aud upon the Arnold, is attracting a considerable number of Settlers, and the trafic retnrns for the mining and agricultural population there would alone pay a handsome dividend upon the cost of constructing a line of railway or tramway comnmnicaiion between them and the port. A careful estimate of the probable revenue to be derived from the trading of the Company has been made upon the assumption that 50,000 tons of Coal 'may be gained per annum, and brought down to the vessels lying at Greymouth After paying liberally for getting the coal, making a fair allowance for otfice and working expenses, and a moderate charge for freight upon the line ; together with 10 per cent, upon Capital, a profit of 25 to 30 per cent, may 1»« anticipated upon a selling price of 10s. per ton for the Coal placed on board ship at Greymouth.
