By the barque Penola, which arrived at Sydney on the 17th ult., from San Francisco, we have the following latest items from California: — A dreadful accident had arrived at the end of April, on the Erie Railroad, near Port Jervis, by which forty lives were sacrificed and a considerable number of persons more or less injured. The ravages of the yellow fever along the western shores of South America were carrying off immense numbers of the population. The theatres and places of public resort, as well as the schools and many of the larger establishments, had closed their doors. In Callao not less than 20©0 had died in six weeks, and the mortality continued at the rate of nearly 200 daily. The hospitals were crowded with patients, aud private buildings had to be brought into use to extend accommodation for the sufferers. The fever had also extended southward along the shores of the Argentine Republic, where its effects were equally fatal. The mortality had at latest advices reached to 28,000 in this republic. In the latest adviceß from Brazil, it was authoritatively stated that the Emperor had determined to abdicate, and return forthwith to Europe. Three ships were on the berth i a.% New York for the colonies. Freights fc> Sydney were at L 2 per ton.
