MEETING OF THE ROAD BOARD.
Yesterday morning an emergency meetiug of tho Road Board was held for the purpose of considering what steps should be taken for repairing tho damage done by the flood. There were present Messrs Fox (in the chair) Whall, and Wickes. It was moved by Mr Fox, and seconded by Mr Whall, "That the following telegram bo forwarded to the Hon. J. A. Bonar, County Chairman : — New works have stood Saturday's flood admirably, with the exception of dam at Boundary street, which, if Kilgour's tramway had baen ono foot higher, would have been saved. In consequence of remaining portion of old works next wharf being carried away, new works and town in imminent danger. Is Mawhera Quay private property 1 Public meeting at 8 p.m. Can you attend." This was agreed to. Mr Wickes moved : — " That the Board ia of opinion, irrespective of the late decision of the Resident Magistrate, adverse to the Board's powers, they feel they would be neglecting the trust invested in ■ them by the public for the general safety F of the town if they did not at once proceed to repair tho damage done by Saturday's flood, a3 in the event of such another flood following, the town and new works would be in imminent danger ; and the Board deem it desirable to call a public meeting to give the inhabitants an opportunity of expressing an opinion on this important question." Mr Whall seconded tho motion, which was carried. An application was considered from the County Chairman for the loan of a monkey, crab- winch, and chain, for the use of the contractor for the erection of tho bridge over Waimea Creek. It was agreed to Bend the apparatus by the first steamer. The Board then adjourned.
