(To the Editor of the O ey River Argus.) Sir — In reading your issue of the 9th inst, I perceived with no small surprise a paragraph commenting in rather a high tone of severity and denunciation touching the conduct and reputation of people belonging to this place, stigmatising in no very measured or complimentary terms men of the locality, and giving at the same time not very enviable or commerdable celebrity to the district.; I deem that I am doing but a simple duty to question the justness of such remarks, and : further to condemn the dark, despicable, mercenary style of traducing the men of & portion of the community without sufficient grounds of a truthful character. I
believe it may be stated without fear of contradiction, that this party of young men referred to, and so sinned against, were in a high state of spirits and bounce at a Lite hour on a certain Saturday night, and in their convivial circumlocution they mot a person with whom tliuy had some words, the dialogue or altercation being brought to a close by one of this harmless party letting fly a stone into the face of the individual in question, leaving a fearful gash across tho temple. Covered with blood this man and his acquaintances looked not for rest that night. It appears tho hasty retreat of the assai)ants'j(vvlu) from various accounts being kiß>\\ii)jjoarly next morning were discovered, and in retaliation tho injured man with a few others took a summary mode of punishment in return for treatment received. And now for a full denial of ohargea made by your informant. It ia not true that certain men alluded to, in jealousy drovo these young men from their good claim to possess it themselves. I have not heard that one dared do such a thing. In leaving this quarter they sold their interest for what they could get, and I have yet to learn that the men who bought into tho above ground have got their purchase money back or that it is highly remunerative. Possess the ground for themselves ! why what ia the Warden and police for 1 The statement is equally untrue that business people here had to close their houses through the disorder that prevailed, when the actual fact is houses were open and business carried on aa usual ; and lastly, his insinuation as to tho gathering of all tho people to force away or drive evil doers iroia the terrace. This is also incorrect. ■ I am pretty well known here, and I never heard of such a movement being initiated. It is pretty evident that your correspondent has drawn upon the imagination to furnish "a bit of sensation news, and beyond a doubt at the same time it is manifest his information is a gross' libel that cannot lie too sharply exposed and contemptuously repudiated. Nelson Creek, for some time back, has been rising into importance, with an increasing population, and when it is stated that no resident police is here, but an occasional visit from the Twelve-mile, wliich fact, generally speaking, is more in favor of the order and high character of the district, than what I could write in its defence, and my own experience has led me to know and believe that all aggrieved people can have justice done them, and all necessary protection given when looked for to the proper authorities, and I cannot help stating that the innocents, who took their departure from here, had clearly in their own hands the righting of their grievances. And, in conclusion, allow me to suggest to you, in future, when information relative to this place is given in your valuable journal, I hope it will not cause the same amount of indignation aniongat miners as the late slanderous assertions Jiave done. I am, &c, Miner. Nelson Creek, July 13, 1868.
