Barley is tho only cereal dull of sale, and there is improbability of improvement. Flour is bri.sk, ami the demand for bran ami sharps in such aa cannot fail but produce a speedy advance. Quotations in any department, howuvur, remain as yet unaltered. Favorable ml vices from tho West Coast and other markets have caused a temporary reaction in the Christchnrch cattle market, and fat beasts are in greatly improved demand. Thu week opened with quotations at from 30s to 35h ptr lUOlb, but 40d cuukl now bo obtained. Holders have hii impression however that still higher rates will be obiainvd wilhiu a wei-k or two, iuul are consequently cuiolcsk of quitting at tbu prices ollorim;. iMiry stock in prolit aru Intel; enquired for, but

inferior quality are almost without demand. Store cattle arc also dull of sale, but fat sheep arc assuming a healthier tone in the market. Dunedin.— The Daily Times of the 4th inst, reports : — In the business of the month just closed, improvement has been visible. Some slackness prevailed during the few days before and after the 30th ultimo ; and, owing to the state of the roads, up-country trade has been, curtailed ; but the nggregato of transactions has ' been good, and business close 3 with promise i of activity during the next few weeks. Mar- ! kets, generally, possess a very firm aspect. Quotations have varied a little generally in i tho direction of improvement, while their is a I prospect of advance in the values of several leading staples. Imports continue on an extremely moderate scale : and stocks, which have for some months been gradually lessening, are now, in a number of articles, running low. Since the sth, the only arrival from the United Kingdom has been the ship Caribou, with a Clyde cargo ; from foreign ports nothing has been due. In the exports of the month, the last of the season's wools are included, und some moderate shipments of grain. The money market rules very easy, and lirst-cluss securities are sought by investors. Melbourne. — The Aye of the 27th ult. reports : — Business ronniiiis without animation ; the mar approach of the end of tho month, when numerous trailers take stock, has the effect of checking transactions except such as are necessary to the providing for pressing requirements. Breads tuffs were tirin ; very little progresß iv sales, however, could be made, buyers aud seller* being alike inclined to wait the arrival of the Panama mail, due in Sydney on 'ViwxOuy next. Victorian country Hour may bo valued at L2O 10s to L2l, according to terms. Victorian wheat was quitted in small lots at 9s 3d to 9s G'l, the latter price being paid for an exceptionally tine sample only. Out? are not in request ; prices, however, are sustained. Maize has commanded a free sale at 3s Sd for parcels landing ex to -( lay's steamer. Ker.<sene has been moved off to the extent of 1500 cases Downer's at Is 10^(1 ; the parcels so quitted were, we understand, in second hands, as importers decline to accept that price. Of tho extensive purchase of Cape raisins ex Alfi ed effected yesterday, a line of 1000 boxes has been re sold for export to a neighboring colony, at a good advance on the prices obtained by the importer. Apricots were sold at G£d. In tobaccoes, a shipment of Venus tens was cleared off at a satisfactory price. Sugars have mot with a fair inquiry, leading to sales of about 1000 bags brown to yellow counters at L 32 10s to L 34. No further business in malt has been i eported, yesterday's transactions having had the effect <.f elevating holders' ideas above buyers' views ; we learn, however, of a parcel of 1800 bushels Chevalier barley having found a buyer at Ga 3d. In liquids we note tho quittance of 100 hhdß Bass's No. 4 ale on private terms, as also of a small lob of Dunphy's stout at Ss9d.
