The p. 8. Persevere left this port late on Tuesday night, with a cargo ot coal for Hokitika, where she arrived on yesterday morning's tide. We are glad to notice that the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company are showing signs of recovering their trading connection with this coast. Their fine steamer the Wellington is announced to leave this port pn Saturday for the Manukau, calling at Westport. Our shipping telegrams announce the departure of b.s. Gothenburg fipm Nelson for this port on the 7th instant, so that, if not detau.ed by the heavy weather on the coast, she ought to be here this inerning. She is announced to leave for Melbourne direct to-morrow. The Panama Company's 6.8. Rangitoto is at present making a rapid run round the New Zealand ports, and is expected to leave here on Saturday, taking passengers direct to Melbourne, and forwarding passengers to Sydney. The schooner Mary Stewart, Captain Clinskill, arrived from Melbourne on Tuesday morning. She cleared Port Philip Heads on the 25th ult., with a light breeze from the north, and the Straits on the 2b" th, from whence she carried light northerly winds until making the lane} en the 4th ii.st. That day, at 7 a.m., she met a strong breeze from the E. N.E., which on Sunday night went round to the S. E., and she ran down and was off the Grey bar on Monday morning, but found the swell on to be too heavy, and was compelled to stand pfT to sea until Tuesday morning, when, the sea having moderated, she stood in for the bar, was picked up by the p.s. Dispatch *and safely moored alongside the wharf. She brings a large cargo pf general merchandise, and is consigned to her owners, Messrs Kennedy Bros. The smart run made by the Mary Stewart on this occasion ought to have placed us in possession of four day's later Melbourne papers, but they were unfortunately destroyed on the passage, the captain anticipating the arrival of soino of the Melbourne steamers before him.
