Mr Pope Hennessy has inaugurated his governorship of Labuan in a spirit and with a vigour which promise well for the ' future of that island. On. the 24th December he laid the first stone of a Chinese school, drove the first stake of the first wharf, and the first of a fish and fruit market, and afterwards entertained at the Government-house all the officials and the principal inhabitants, without distinction of race. The new works will not be so expensive as to trench too heavily on the limited resources of the island, while they will encourage commerce by multiplying the facilities for carrying it on, and render the place additionally attractive as a residence to the eastern races. Governor Hennessy has shown, both in the selection of the works and bis inaugural address, that he recognises the importance to such a settlement of the Chinese element of the population, which is the backbone of commerce and industry in the Far East ; and j if the policy which he has adopted is steadily followed up his abilities will not have been in vain transferred from the Imperial Parliament to that distant island.
