The steamer Star of the South left Hokitika pn Sunday morning with 100 passengers— 30 oi whom were from Greymouth— for j Maryborough, Queensland. The as. Omeo may be expected to arrive here on Thursday. The fine coastingsteatiiT.Tohn Perm arrived $n the river from Ifelson via intermediate ports on Saturday morning, bringing a goodly number of passengers. She left Ifelson on the afternqon of the 15th and arrived at the Buller the following day. She there dispharged a quantity of live stock and fifty tons cargo, and left again on the 17/ th at 4.50 p.m., and arrived off this port the same evening, and came in the following moning. She left for Hokitika the same alternoon, and reached the Hokitika wharf at 7 o'clock in the evening. She took 40 passengers on her pwn account and 30 for the Star of the Squth, bound for Queensland. We find the following in the West Coast Times of yesterday :— The mysterious disappearance of John Sutherland, a fireman, belonging tp the s.s. Waipara, has given rise to some speculation and a great deal of apErehensipn as to his safety. Accompanied y a brpther fireman he went on shore on Saturday evening, and spent seveaal hours at the (Sale Hotel, Beach street, and then, in rather a jolly state, both men returned to the steamer 'again. The one went on bpard ilirectly, but Sutherland declined, said he Bhould make a night of it, and walked away up Wharf street. He has not been seen or heard of since, but the fact that tke glazed cap he wore was yesteulay morning found lying on the gangway plank leading from the wharf to the Waipara, led to the belief that he bad fallen into the river, whilst trying to get on board his vessel. We have, however, reason to suspect that the cap was placed there as " a blind," and that the man is away in the s.s. Star of the S,oi}th. The facts of the case, were made known to the police, and they, w}th their usual promptness jind attention, {searched the beach closely from the mouth of the river northwards in expectatipn of the deac} body being cast oc shore. Nothing, however, came of the search, which was maintained whilst dajlight lasted.
