I'wday, Apkh. 17, Sly-Grog Selling. — A- woman known as Mrs Swords, who resides at an- nn<. licensed honae, late the Robin Hood Hotel, Richmond Quay, was brought np charged on the information of Geo. Simmons with, having committed a breach of the License ing Ordinance, in selling spirits without a license. The case was clearly proved on the evidence of Simmons and two other men. It appears that the defendant had long been suspected, but had managed to elude detection by the police. Mr Simmons, who resides near, and to whom the house was a nuisance, along with two others, went into the house and called for brandy, which the defendant supplied and took the money for. Mr Perkins, who appeared for the defence, endeavored to show that the witness Simmons, was, actuated by vindictive motives. Mr Simmons admitted that he was anxious to get rid of the woman, as she was w a human Vesuvius, belching forth from her crater the lava of infamy." The defendant was fined L2O and costs. Breaking Windows. -^Jessie M*Leod, au old offender, was fine.d 14 for. breaking windows, and on a, further charge of vagrancy, was sentenced to three months imprisonment. . Drunkenness.— Jamea Dunn was fined 20s, and James Battle a like sum for this offence.
