Yesterday afternoon, a telegram was sent from the friends of the political prisoners at Hokitika instructing Mr Guinness, junr., of this town, to proceed to Hokitika, for the purpose ( f preparing and conducting the defence of the prisoners at the magisterial ! examination on Wednesday, , We have to remind our readers that this is the last day on which they will have an opportunity of depositing their claims to have their names placed on the new electoral rolls, liegistration forms can be had gratis at this office, and these can be deposited with the liegistration Officer, at the Court House, Greymouth. We take the following, with reference to the "superseding" of Father Larkin, from the West Coast Times of yesterday: — "By the Omeo, the Rev. Mr M'Taggart arrived in Hnkitikst. He is charged by the Eight Rev. Bishop Viard with the duty of superseding Father Larkin, in his clerical functions. The latter gentleman, we understand, sets at deliance the authority of the Bishop of Wellington, on the plea that he came to New Zealand as a missionary priest, and owes his allegiance to the Bishop of another see. When it was known that a warrant had been i3Sued against him, the ltev. Mr M'Donough made an appeal to the Government on behalf of the reverend Father, but was informed by an official letter from the County Secietary's office, that Father Larkiu had stated to Mr Bonar that 'he acknowledged no authority of any Bishop over him. 1 Mr Sale's letter continues :— ' The only course therefore remaining to the Government is. to proceed against Father Larkin according to law for any offences of -which he nmy be found guilty. ' Father Larkin has thus been handed over from the ecclesiastical to the civil power, and we trust the civil power will give him ample meed of justice." We are indebted to the courtesy of Mr Maude, the Enumerator for the purpose of taking the consus returns of Westland, for a telegram informing us of the results of the recent returns. The approximate return of the population of the town of Greymouth is given as— Males, 1113 ; females, 494. Total, IGO7. The town of Hokitika— Alales^ 3035 ; females, 1.531. Total, 4866. Total of the Westland Boroughs, G473. There is an apparent error in the graud total as given, and either Mr Maude must be ignorant of the fact that one-half of the town of Greymouth is not included in the Westland Boroughs, but belongs to the Electoral District of Westland South, or. else the population of Greymouth must be fully double that stated iv the returns. We believe the population is pretty correctly given, and that the error has been caused by the peculiar position in which the town is placed. The Lyttelton Times states that a serious accident occurred to a drayman in the employ of Mr Blackett, storekeeper. It appears, he was returning from Christchurch, driving a dray ami two horses, when some person passing either accidentally or intentionally struck his shaft horse on the head, causing it to spring round towards him and knock him down. His leg got entangled in the wheel, and was broken between the knee and ancle. He -was found in a helpless condition by Mr Bowmaker, who procured assistance as soon as possible, when he was removed to the Christchurch Hospital. The accident occurred near the Cam mill bridge. Richmond Quay has recently been rendered impassable for coaches or drays by the material required in the protective works being piled up on it. The servants of the Road Board have taken entire control of the roadway, and it is only at the risk of lifs and limb that any vehicle can pass. The roadway was quite narrow enough without being covered with pil*s > aud some arrangement ought to be made whereby the convenience of the public residing in the street will be consulted.
