INTERCOLONIAL NEWS.
Melbourne papers received by the Gothenburg contain the following items of telegraphic intelligence from. Sydney and Adelaide : — SYDNEY. Mr Mackenzie, formerly of Melbourne, contractor forthe.extensionof the Western Railway, is reported to be missing. New diggings ha,ve been discovered fifteen miles from Brisbane. The schooner Clutha, from Melbourne, when entering the harbor of Newcastle, was swept towards the North Shore, and wrecked on the spit. The crew are safe. A steady rain and a southerly gale have prevailed. The Hunter rose ten feet in five hours, and overflowed its banks. The settlers on the low-lying lands were compelled to abandon their houses, and seek safety in Windsor. An immense flood covers the valley. Boats have been despatched by railway to render assistance. Much property has been destroyed. Two dams at the Botany Waterworks have given way. The Chelydra, barque, from Melbourne to Newcastle, has been totally wrecked north of Port Stephens ; on man drowned. - Fishook is being heavily backed to win to Sydney Cup. Portions of a wreck, apparently of a French vessel, have been washed ashore at Newcastle. The captain of the schooner Edith has been pushed overboard by a sailor at Bowen. The man has been committed for trial. The brig Woodlark has been wrecked near the Seal Rocks — crew saved. The. schooners Cheetah, Abbey, and Raven, were wrecked on Cloudy Head during the late gale. Portions of two other wrecks have corns ashore. They are supposed to be parts, of the brig Gratia andjthe barque General Wood. Several bodies have been floated to the shore.
