SALTWATER AND NEW RIVER DISTRICT.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Rdtherglen, March 9. Notwithstanding the excitement amongst •the raining community produced by the ; glowing accounts of the richness of the Queensland diggings, extensive works are in progress in this district, -which will, when completed, be the means of richly, rewarding the enterprising men. Ever since the opening of tho terraces running parallel with the South beach, it has been well known that if a large supply of water could bs c irried on them, not < ui'y wouLl they pay extremely good wages but would ultimately yield a pile. The initiation of tfus work has at last been undertaken by Bnni3 and party, as well as by Gallager and Co. These two parties having obtained the right of constructing dams Across the Saltwater Creek, and cutting races so as to carry water on to the torraces between the Ballarat and the Nelson. Fitzgerald and party, of Welshman's Terrace, have likewise applied to extend their race to the beach. They have been fortunate enough to find a route by which they can reach their destination in something less than four miles, and that the water in its course will comfttaud some very likely looking terraces which have already been prospected by parties cradling. When these three extensive undertakings are completed, and the water allowed to do its work, the beqeh terraces will yield more gold than has ever been yet produced from them. Svich is the opinion by men well conversant with this snbject. Auother large undertaking is in progress at the Lagoon Lead, Saltwater. Rees and party, who, whilst working at the whim claim, sometime since discovered that the lead of gold took a turn into dpep and wet ground, applied for a grant of two and a quarter acres. They then commenced a deep tail-race from the lagoon, which has engaged themselves and another party who amalgamated with them for the last four months. This is one of the largest jmd fcest pieces of work for a tail-race that this district can boast of . When completed it will be §50 yards in length, of which upwards of 200 yards have been cut till ( the depth reached 26 feet. This had to be close slabbed on account of the loose eand and gravel, ar-jd splendid work they have made of it. The water in the shaft before they commenced the tail-race was fully three feet, now it is only six inches. The nigh are at present driving a tunnel instead of an open race. This has to be carefully slabbed, or serious consequences jnight ensue. No one, unless he sees the work, can appreciate, the labor of these ?nen. They expect that by another week they will see the completion of the lunnel wheu they hope to be occupied in the iu ore pleasant and renjuneraj;ive occupation of getting" gold, which they anticipate will pay them very handsome wages for many months; and richly do they "deserve, success for the amount of perseverance and labor they haje b§stowed on the undertaking. . Limestouc Range seems to be growing in favor with the niiuera about heye. They report the ground patchy and shallow, but that the great drawback is the w,ant of water, of which, if they ha.d a plentiful supply, they c<ml4 manage to do very well.
