The Council met at 7 p.m.; all the members being present. PETITION. Mr HARRISON presented a petition from 150 of the inhabitants of Greymouth and its suburbs, praying that the office of Inspector of Police. may be continued, and that Mr W, H, James may be re-ap-pointed to the office. Read and received. TRAMWAYS. Mr HARRISON moved — " That a Select Committee, consisting of Messrs. Shaw, Hoos, Whall, Keary, and the mover, be appointed to take into consideration . the subject of tramways in the County of Westland, and ito submit to the Council resolutions on the subject on Thursday, the 20th inst," Mr HOOS seconded the motion, which was passed. GAOL RETURNS. Mr HARRISON moved— 'For a return of tho muni c.-of p.-isonerscommitted from the Resident Magistrate's Court at Greymouth for trial before- the District Court of Hokitika, and the cost of the conveyance of such prisoners from Greymouth to Hokitika. Also, for a return of the number of prisoners summarily convicted at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Greymouth, and sentenced to imprisonment in the Hokitika Gaol, and the cost of the conveyance of such prisoners." Mr HOOS seconded the motion, which was passed. - / GREYMOUTH GAOL. Mr WHALL moved— « That in the opinion of this Council it is expedient that the lock-up at Greymouth should be declared a common gaol." After a discussion the motion was withdrawn. THE SURPLUS REVENUE. Mr BARFF moved— "That in the opinion of this Council; it is desirable that the surplus revenues of the County of Westland should be expended in the various districts in proportion to the amount of reveuue raised in such district." Mr KEARY seconded the motion. Mr SHAW opposed the motion, on the ground that if passed it would have the
effect of putting a stop to further discus - sion of the subject. Mr HARRISON also opposed the motion. Mr BQNAR opposed the resolution, as; it would have the effect of binding the Council in the distribution of the surplus revenue. *..._« Mr BARFF briefly replied. The Council divided :— Ayes ; Hops, Clarke, Keary, Barff. Noes: Harrison, Whall, Shaw, Bonar. ' ' ' The CHAIRMAN said that he shou]4 give his casting vote with the "Noes, ' v . and for this reason, that he did not think the necessary data' for could possibly be obtained. THE LAND RESOLUTIONS. The consideration of tlje Land Resolutions in Committee was made the first order of the day for to-morrow. On the motion of Mr SHAW, it was, resolved— "That public vaccinators should be appointed in Hokitika and the Grey." Also—" That prison labor should, as far as practicable, be applied tP the clearing of the Cemetery Reserve in Hokitika."And also — " That the Government be requested to grant a sum of LSO in aid of the public subscription for the family of Mr and Mrs Furness, who were lately killed, and whose property was almost entirely destroyed."
